The end of wearing outdoor face masks in Spain is coming and some people are thinking about how to improve their smiles. A healthy and beautiful smile creates many opportunities for us both personally and professionally.

Here at Clinica Cloe, we are proud to be one of a small number of DSD clinics worldwide. Why is this significant? This is a status awarded to clinics that have the skills and qualifications to deliver Digital Smile Design for their patients.

We are experts in this innovative method of smile planning and delivery. We get asked many questions about Digital Smile Design and how we use this protocol in our dental clinic in Madrid to deliver the most confident smiles for our patients. That is why our experts in Dental Aesthetics, Dr. Victor Begara and Dr. Mya Choufani answered the six most frequently asked questions about smile transformation.

    1. What happens when you deliver digital smile design treatment at Clinica Cloe in Madrid?

First, we have to collect all the data we need for the process. That means x-rays, an internal (also called intra-oral) scan of the mouth, and taking photos and videos of your smile. We use a mouth scanner to take detailed digital impressions of your teeth, instead of using the traditional cold and unpleasant paste to bite into. We have a state-of-the-art photo studio in our office, so we can take facial pictures of our patients. Using advanced software, we create a 2D simulation of how a patient’s new smile could look. This is then used to create a 3D model of your smile. We use all this information to create an accurate and fully customized smile design project to suit every patient’s unique features and we test-drive your smile before we get started.

    2. What do you mean when you say I can test-drive my new smile?

When we talk about a test drive, what we actually mean is that we create a 3D mockup of your new smile that we fit into your mouth. You are able to see it from a big screen where you can see all of the details of your new smile. Every patient will know exactly what is going to happen before treatment begins. It's like having plans for a house. You would never have blind faith in a builder who doesn’t have a professional plan designed by an architect? As long as everybody agrees with the plans of the house, then it's just a question of delivering the house. It’s the same with a cosmetic smile makeover and digital smile design.

    3. What are natural restorations?

In the past, dentistry did not have as many esthetic solutions as we have now. Dentists and lab technicians were not always able to create false teeth that looked real; the color of the teeth and the depth of the surface could make teeth look ‘fake’. Nowadays, most people appreciate the more natural-looking appearance of teeth.

Through digital dentistry, we can create natural shapes, that is a tooth with a lot of form and texture. It's not flat. With digital dentistry, we can create a very thin layer of ceramic on a regular basis. And with digital dentistry, we can replicate that shape at any time any moment. We can create 1,000 copies of that shape. So, we can create a natural tooth, designed, created, and prepared in a machine as many times as we want. Natural teeth are not perfect in symmetry and have a lot of texture. So that's basically what natural restorations are.

We can copy your natural beautiful teeth and make them into a veneer. So that tooth is going to look as natural as an untouched natural tooth.

    4. What is emotional dentistry?

Emotional dentistry is a term we use as dentists, essentially it means that you as a patient enjoy coming into the office. Often when we present a treatment plan to a patient, they get emotional. They may smile or even cry. DSD changes the perception about dental work, about dentists, and about the dental facility. We believe we create a relationship between the patient, the dentist, and the treatment. So, everything gets connected. And it's something that has to happen for the patient to understand what is going to be done.

    5. What is a facially driven smile design?

Traditionally, smile designs have been done based on a stone model without a face. We would look at how we could make changes to the teeth and gums but without thinking about the face as a whole. This meant that some smiles fit very well for some patients, but the same smiles and shapes didn’t fit for other patients. Through digital dentistry, we are able to create smile design based on the facial features of every individual patient. That is why it is called a "facially driven" smile design. We consider facial features as vitally important when it comes to designing a smile. This allows us to create the perfect smile for every face.

    6. What is morphopsychology in smile design?

Morphopsychology is how your teeth appear and how that correlates or connects with how you want people to see you. There is a whole theory about the shape of the teeth, how they affect your psychology. Some shapes of teeth suit people that are more extroverted. Whilst other shapes of teeth suit people who are more introverted. The bottom line, the appearance of the teeth have a far-reaching impact on a person’s life and how people view them.
