    2. They should take care to protect their mouths and teeth during sports by wearing a mouthguard or other protective gear. 
    3. Athletes should also be aware of the signs and symptoms of gum disease, such as red, swollen, or bleeding gums, and seek treatment as son as possible if they notice any of this issues. This can include procedures such as scaling and root planning, which remove plaque and tartar from the teeth and gums, and gum surgery.
